Pasture-raised poultry production and biological quality: standards, certifications and brand availability in thirteen countries
Nutrition
The commercial poultry industry relies primarily on intensive production systems (CAFOs) that employ fast-growing breeds and management practices associated with animal welfare issues, preventive use of antimicrobials, and a decline in the product's nutritional profile. This study comparatively reviews the main welfare and organic production certification schemes applicable to chicken meat—including USDA Organic, Certified Humane, Global Animal Partnership (GAP), and European organic production frameworks—and contrasts them with conventional labeling and standard industry practices. Based on these criteria, the availability of commercial brands that meet standards for real pasture, organic feed, and the absence of systemic antimicrobial prophylaxis is examined in thirteen countries: Chile, Panama, Spain, Venezuela, the United States, Peru, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Guatemala. The results show marked heterogeneity: Spain and the United States have readily available certified products in retail outlets, several Latin American countries have emerging niche initiatives, and others (Chile, Uruguay, the Dominican Republic, and Guatemala) lack commercial poultry production certified under the defined criteria. The implications for public health, food policy, and institutional procurement recommendations are discussed, as well as the limitations of labeling claims not audited by third parties. Keywords: commercial poultry, pasture-based, animal welfare, regenerative agriculture, clean labeling, certifications, antimicrobials, public health, Latin America, Ibero-America.
