TUMORS BOIL WITH SOUND, High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)
Exposure Longevity & Metrics
Introduction. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a well-established non-invasive ablative modality in oncology. Its development has been driven asymmetrically by the Chinese industry, while its international regulatory approval is progressing more slowly. Objectives. To characterize the leading Chinese technological platforms (Chongqing Haifu and Shenzhen PRO HITU Medical), evaluate the available clinical evidence for their main oncological and benign indications, and describe the regulatory and clinical adoption landscape globally, with an emphasis on Mexico. Methods. Narrative review of indexed scientific literature, manufacturers' technical documentation, regulatory agency approval records (NMPA, FDA, EMA), and institutional reports on the clinical implementation of HIFU. Results. The JC series systems (JC200, JC200D, and JC300) represent the state of the art in extracorporeal ablation and have generated robust clinical evidence in prostate, liver, pancreatic, breast, and uterine fibroid cancers, with response rates and safety profiles competitive with surgery and radiotherapy. International adoption shows a bimodal pattern: early integration in Asia and European academic centers, versus a more gradual penetration in North America, conditioned by FDA approvals limited to specific indications. Mexico is positioned as a relevant regional hub through private centers in Aguascalientes, Puerto Vallarta, and the northern border. Conclusions: HIFU represents a therapeutic alternative with consolidated evidence for selected indications. The gap between the technological maturity of Chinese systems and their regulatory adoption in the West is the main limiting factor for its widespread adoption. The related technique of histotripsy is shaping the next generation of non-thermal cavitation ablation. Keywords: HIFU, non-invasive ablation, oncology, Chinese systems, medical regulation, histotripsy.
